Formed in Tokyo in 2010, Babymetal was created by fusing heavy metal and Japanese idol genres. They started off as a sub-unit of the idol group Sakura Gakuin, featuring school-aged members who take off once they graduate. In 2013, the band became independent after Nakamoto's graduation from Sakura Gakuin. While they made strong waves in Japan, majority of their tours also took place in Europe and the Americas, marking their global domination in the unqiue genre. With five albums to their name, they never stop rocking out and serving Kawaii metal energies.
Back in January 2013, Babymetal released their major record label debut with "Ijime, Dame, Zettai". Selling over 19,000 copies in its first week and debuting at #6 on the Oricon Weekly Singles Chart, they made it known that they're serious about rockin' it out to metal bangers. Since then, they've attracted millions of fans around the world. Their biggest hits include "Megitsune", "Road of Resistance", "Starlight", "Distortion", "Pa Pa Ya!!" feat F. Hero, "Ratatata" with Electric Callboy, "My Queen" feat Spiritbox, and more.
Critics have become drawn to their unique tracks and image, offering a different taste of metal music to listeners around the world. "For those of us whose musical tastes fall somewhere in the middle, Babymetal is kind of like a magical, leather-clad, fire-breathing, sonic unicorn," said The Daily Dot.
Meanwhile, The Guardian elaborates on a 'Eureka!' moment that probably caused this band's existence, "realised that Japanese audiences were certain to unquestioningly embrace such a seemingly incongruous mish-mash of cutting-edge musical ideas."
Fellow artists have also shared their thoughts about the group,. with Rob Halford from Judas Priest declaring that "Babymetal is the future of metal". Meanwhile, Rob Zombie took responded to divisive comments from fans after a photo with Babymetal, sharing that "These three girls had more energy than 90 percent of the bands we play with".
